Pitch Perfect: The Best Performers in A Cappella Land

Pitch Perfect

Since Glee came to the scene in 2009 there has been a wave of singing groups forming around the world. Now with the Pitch Perfect movie demonstrating the a cappella way of performing, it has only heightened this want for more mouthy talent on the scene.

Here are some real a cappella groups which will make your jaw drop:

The SoCal VoCals:

The competition that the The Barden Bellas and the Treblemakers fight to win is a real life contest. The International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella was founded in 1996 and it takes place annual from January to April in six regions: West, Midwest, South, Mid-Atlantic, Northeast, and Europe. Over the past five years the best of the best has been the SoCal VoCals from the University of Southern California who have won the ICCA in 2008, 2010 and 2012 respectively.

Walk off the Earth:

Walk off the Earth is an indie band from Canada who post covers and low budget originals on YouTube. They don’t solely perform a cappella, but when they do it is a magical goosebumpy experience to listen to. They became a phenomenal hit last year with their cover of Gotye and Kimbra’s ‘Somebody That I Used to Know’ by performing it with only one guitar. Their latest a cappella cover, featuring KRNFX, is of Taylor Swift’s ‘I Knew You Were Trouble’, which has astonished the country star herself as she has Tweeted: “I’ve had so many people send me this. SO unbelievably cool! @walkofftheearth @krnfx”.

Mike Tompkins:

One of the most famous solo a cappellians at the moment has to be Mike Tompkins. So famous in fact that he was even able to do a cover of ‘Starships’ by Nicki Minaj with the Pitch Perfect cast. He will be performing at the Streamy Awards, which honours the best in web television, on February 17th.

Pentatonix:

Pentatonix is a five member a cappella group from Arlington, Texas who won the third season of NBC’s ‘The Sing-Off’ in 2011. The band is currently hitting the road on their headline tour from January 24th, 2013 to March 13th, 2013 whilst they write original tracks for their second EP. As well as this, they continue to post covers on YouTube. Their recent cover being a more family-friendly take on the unexpected US Billboard Hot 100 number one hit ‘Thrift Shop’ by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis.
